Earlier in the year, Esotouric posted about WWII air-raid sirens that still remain up throughout Los Angeles. I became slightly obsessed with them, though I have only sought out a few so far. They were put up in 1942. I often see strange streetlights or objects on poles and wonder what they are, so was very pleased to find out about these.
Like the cool aviation arrows once used by small planes delivering mail across the USA, some of which can still seen, many of these old timey relics are in plain site and are a cool historical activity in Los Angeles. As I have often done in the 13 years of Dart and Map, I look up historical markers or places and plan a day or a whole trip around them, often finding amazing things on the way to the destination. The ones I have seen so far are just near me, but eventually, I will use the ones farther away to curate a unique day out for myself.
I just started finding them since the beginning of this year (2023) and have been using this site. As I was writing my Instagram post about it, I searched again and found a great google map,
Los Angeles County, CA Cold War Siren Systems
The Los Angeles Times has the original press release about the sirens here.
And, of course, drive safely and pull your car over to view the air-raid sirens. Happy hunting!

Note on Esotouric: They give extremely cool tours of Los Angeles and are very knowledgeable about its history. If you are planning a visit to LA, you should definitely look into the tours they will be giving during your stay.
