You don’t have to go to Utah for Red Rocks

You may have seen them when you are driving up (or down) the 14 Freeway in Southern California. Suddenly you wonder if you drove farther north than you realized, but you are only about 120 miles away from Los Angeles. The red rocks. They look like Utah. But you are in Cantil, CA and what you are seeing is Red Rock Canyon State Park. And it is gorgeous!

Backdrop to numerous movie scenes, the park has plenty of parking, and hiking trails. It offers a campsite and day-use picnic area. And it has bathrooms. Port-a-potties! Oh boy that means a lot to me!

Stunning orange, red, white, and pink rock formations fill your eyes. The area has served as a trade route for Native Americans for many millennia, gold mining, a stage coach stop, a location for films, commercials, and tv shoots, and a railroad stop.

I went for a short time and explored. Keep in mind you can visit it on both sides of the 14 fwy. Also, leave anything you find where you found it. Leave no trace.
